It would be nice if parents knew the rules of the sport or sports their kids play. The fact is that this is impossible. We're all too busy with so many things in our lives. If you have time, learn a few rules.

Sometimes we have so many obligations to even find time to attend our kids games. We can only try to go as often as possible. Some kids want you present more than others. But that usually depends on how supportive you are.

It is often said that parents not knowing the rules contributes to abuse of game officials. That is true but the following is also true and more important:

Even those who know the rules must respect game officials. People often want to show others how knowledgable they are by shouting out about something they believe the ref or umpire has gotten wrong. But to teach respect to our kids, we need to set a good example ourselves. And anyway, most of the time, it's the fan or coach who didn't see it correctly and the official who had it right.

Please don't be one of those fans who, despite not being aware of the rules, joins in criticizing because another alleged adult started it. There should be no criticism of people doing the best they can. Most of all, that refers to the kids.
